Being overweight is defined as a person with a body mass index(BMI) of 25 or over and being obese is defined as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 30.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. A high BMI can be an indicator of high body fatness.

How is obesity classified?

  • If your BMI is less than 18.5, it falls within the underweight range.
  • If your BMI is 18.5 to <25, it falls within the normal.
  • If your BMI is 25.0 to <30, it falls within the overweight range.
  • If your BMI is 30.0 or higher, it falls within the obese range.

Obesity is frequently subdivided into categories:

  • Class 1: BMI of 30 to < 35
  • Class 2: BMI of 35 to < 40
  • Class 3: BMI of 40 or higher. Class 3 obesity is sometimes categorized as “extreme” or “severe” obesity.

What percent of the US population are considered obese?

In the United States, about 39.8% of the adult population are considered clinically obese in the year  2015~2016.

What percent of the US population are overweight or obese?

Excluding those that are obese, about 31.8% of the US adult population are overweight.

The prevalence of obesity was 39.8% and affected about 93.3 million of US adults in 2015~2016.

Combined together with being obese and overweight, about  71.6% of the US adults are considered overweight.
