8 things that can cause weight gain in greater Philadelphia

While many factors make people gain weight, some are more commonly seen and more important than others.

Here are 8 causes of weight gain for people in and around Philadelphia which also apply to people in other parts of the US and world to large degree.

  • Number one cause of weight gain in Philadelphia

Failed Food Pyramid

Although we traditionally were told eating more calories than burning is the cause of weight gain, this idea or concept of energy balance is purely mathematical and helped none to solve the obesity epidemic. Did we miss something as to what truly causes weight gain, eating habits, and hunger? Was this whole idea of eat less, exercise more an oversimplification that leads to the attitude of blaming the victim? Before we look at the what causes the weight gain, let us review what the US Government did in terms of healthy food recommendations in the form of the now failed and withdrawn food pyramid. Did the failed food pyramid contribute to the obesity epidemic?

  • Number two cause of weight gain in Philadelphia

Metabolic Factors

Metabolic factors such as insulin resistance.

What is insulin?

Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that helps glucose in your blood enter cells in your muscle, fat, and liver, where it’s used for energy. Glucose comes from the food you eat. The liver also makes glucose in times of need, such as when you’re fasting. When blood glucose, also called blood sugar, levels rise after you eat, your pancreas releases insulin into the blood. Insulin then lowers blood glucose to keep it in the normal range.

What is insulin resistance?

Insulin resistance is when cells in your muscles, fat, and liver don’t respond well to insulin and can’t easily take up glucose from your blood. As a result, your pancreas makes more insulin to help glucose enter your cells. As long as your pancreas can make enough insulin to overcome your cells’ weak response to insulin, your blood glucose levels will stay in the healthy range. Find out if you could be insulin resistant using this free online tool from W8MD.

  • Number three cause of weight gain in Philadelphia

Food and Activity

People gain weight when they eat more calories than they burn through activity. This imbalance is the greatest contributor to weight gain.

  • Number four cause of weight gain in Philadelphia

Environment

The world around us influences our ability to maintain a healthy weight. For example:

  • Not having area parks, sidewalks, and affordable gyms makes it hard for people to be physically active.
  • Oversized food portions increase Americans’ calorie intake, making even more physical activity necessary to maintain a healthy weight.
  • Some people don’t have access to supermarkets that sell affordable healthy foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Food advertising encourages people to buy unhealthy foods, such as high-fat snacks and sugary drinks.
  • Number five cause of weight gain in Philadelphia

Genetics

Research shows that genetics plays a role in obesity. Genes can directly cause obesity in such disorders as Prader-Willi syndrome.

Genes also may contribute to a person’s susceptibility to weight gain. Scientists believe that genes may increase a person’s likelihood of becoming obese but that outside factors, such as an abundant food supply or little physical activity, also may be required for a person to put on excess weight.

  • Number six cause of weight gain in Philadelphia

Health Conditions

Some hormone problems may cause overweight and obesity, such as under-active thyroid, Cushing syndrome and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

  • Number seven cause of weight gain in Philadelphia

Stress, Emotional Factors

Some people eat more than usual when they are bored, angry, upset, or stressed.

Studies also have found that the less people sleep, the more likely they are to be overweight or obese.

  • Number eight cause of weight gain in Philadelphia

Medications

Certain medicines also may cause weight gain, including some corticosteroids, antidepressants, and seizure medicines.

Now that we reviewed what causes weight gain, what is it that we can do to help lose weight in greater Philadelphia? Here are some tips.

8 things you can do to lose weight in Philadelphia

Follow recommendations for nutrition and physical activity, including:

 Avoid sweetened drinks including sodas, sweetened teas, sports drinks, and fruit drinks. Drink tap water or seltzer with an ounce of juice instead.

 Limit sugar to 25 grams per day for women and 50 grams for men. Read labels, because sugar is in many products.

 Limit screen time to no more than 2 hours daily.

 Engage in physical activity for 60 minutes per day and reduce sedentary time. Make the activity something you enjoy. Do it every day for at least a few minutes even if you can’t fit in your full hour.

 Fill half of your plate with fruits and/or vegetables. This will help you limit portion sizes of other, more calorie-dense foods.

 Include healthy fats in your diet, such as fish (tuna or salmon), olive oil, or a few unsalted nuts.

 Prepare food at home instead of eating processed, take-out or restaurant food.

 Get professional help when you really need to lose weight and have tried many fad diets in the past.

I started 7 months ago and have lost 60 lbs. It may sound slow, but it worked for me, and I lost inches. We all have been on diets that you start off great and then fall off. This is the first diet that I have had success on. Dr. Tumpati and his staff is great. If you have any concerns about anything he always guides you through it. I also like that he is a Dr. so if your on any prescriptions he can monitor you as you go along.

King of Prussia W8MD weight loss center reviews

I have been following the W8MD plan since March of 2014. I switched doctors to Dr Tumpati in May of 2014. To date I have 40 lbs off and have kept it off since September of this year. It is the easiest plan I have ever been on. I have tried NutrySystem, Jenny Craig and am a lifetime member of Weight watchers. I have never been successful in losing this much weight let alone keeping it off for any significant time.

Dr Tumpati and his staff are wonderful. He takes his time with you and makes sure you are medically stable and healthy enough to begin the program. I have Crohn’s disease and have had 2 bowel surgeries and have spent 15 years in and out of the hospital on numerous meds and dealing with horrendous pain and side effects. Since starting this plan, there is NO trace of Crohn’s disease in my body and I am pain free… including my chronic hip and knee pain. I slept better, my mood is better and overall feel the best I have felt in years!

Do yourself a favor and call them to make an appointment and feel better fast!

Cigna weight loss coverage

  • Are you tired of being overweight or obese and need to lose some weight?

  • Do you know the 2010 Affordable Care Act mandates coverage for weight loss?
Weight loss success stories

Weight loss success stories

Does Cigna provide coverage for weight loss?

Since the Affordable Care Act of 2010 mandated coverage for screening for obesity for all adults for obesity and treatment for those that meet certain BMI criteria, CIGNA and most other insurances do cover weight loss screening and treatment via a physician. However, coverage for weight loss medications is limited or restricted by most Cigna plans.

Are the W8MD weight loss programs in network with Cigna in greater Philadelphia, New Jersey or New York City?

Yes, most W8MD insurance weight loss programs accept and are in network with Cigna for weight loss physician visits.

Does Cigna insurance pay for weight loss doctor visits?

Yes, also for any tests and weight loss counseling is covered in general although deductibles and or copays might be apply.

What is a healthy weight for me?

A healthy weight is a weight that lowers your risk for health problems. For most people, body mass index (BMI) and waist size are good ways to tell if they are at a healthy weight.

Why pay attention to your weight?

Staying at a healthy weight can help prevent serious health problems, including:

  • Heart disease.
  • Stroke.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Type 2 diabetes.
  • Sleep apnea.
  • Certain cancers.

Why most diets fail?

  • Most diets are fad diets and don’t work.
    • Diets are temporary. When you diet, you’re usually not eating the way you will need to eat over the long term. So when you quit dieting, the extra weight comes back. This is why you need the help of a doctor that is trained in obesity medicine to guide you with a lifestyle change and not another fad diet.
    • Dieting usually means not letting yourself have many of the foods you love to eat. So when you quit dieting, you return to eating those foods as much as you used to-or more. And the extra weight comes back.
    • Dieting often means eating so little food that you’re hungry all the time and don’t have enough energy. So when you quit dieting, you return to eating as much as you did before-or more. And the extra weight comes back.
    • Most diet programs don’t include an increase in activity, which is vital to staying at a healthy weight. So when you quit dieting, the weight comes back.
  • Fad diets can actually be bad for you.
    • After they quit dieting, most people regain the weight they lost-and many gain even more.
    • Many diets do not include the right balance of foods to keep you healthy.
    • Dieting leads to eating disorders in some people.
    • Some people feel so defeated after repeatedly failing to lose weight and keep it off that they give up altogether on healthy eating and being active.

Since fad diets don’t work, what can you do?

Consult with a weight loss doctor trained in obesity medicine that can use an evidence based program to not only help you to lose weight but also to maintain the weight once you reached your weight loss goals.

Weight loss success stories

Weight loss success storiesNeed to lose weight?

You’re not alone. You may be able to get free help through your health care plan* under the Affordable Care Act.

Most health insurance plans, including Aetna, and all plans purchased through the Marketplace, now include coverage for obesity screening and counseling.

Who is considered overweight or obese?

If you have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 or higher, you are considered to be overweight. A BMI of 30 or more is obese.

Are there benefits to losing weight?

People who are obese are more likely to get serious health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. Losing weight can lower your chances of getting any of those.

If your doctor finds that you fit the medical guidelines for obesity, you may get counseling sessions on diet and weight reduction. This may include one-on-one meetings, or you may get weight loss advice and support in a group.

The counseling sessions can help you change any unhealthy eating and exercise habits. That, in turn, can help you lose weight and lower the chance of health problems.

Is obesity covered by Aetna insurance?

Yes. The Affordable Care Act mandates screening for all adults irrespective of their weight be covered as well as treatment for those that are considered obese with a BMI of 30 or over, or those that are overweight with a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one obesity related comorbidity.

Is W8MD weight loss program covered by Aetna insurance?

Yes, we are in network with most Aetna plans in our greater Philadelphia, New York City, New Jersey and other areas.

What weight loss medications are covered by insurance?

Most plans exclude weight loss medication coverage as it depends on the employer.

  • Did you know that Medicare, Medicaid and all private insurances are mandated to cover preventive services including weight?
  • If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you are at the right place.

How common is obesity in the US?

According to the CDC, in 2015-2016, about 39% or over two thirds of the US adult population are overweight or obese.

Losing weight

Losing weight

What are the risks of being overweight or obese?

Being overweight or obese increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, gall bladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, and colon, breast, endometrial, and prostate cancers. Other health consequences include compromised psychological well-being along with social stigmatization and discrimination.

Medicare and Medicaid Coverage for Weight Loss

Since the passage of the 201o Affordable Care Act, Medicare and by extension, state medicaid program

s, as well as private health insurances are mandated to provide coverage for weight loss physician visits under preventive care.

Since the passage of the 201o Affordable Care Act, Medicare and by extension, state medicaid program

Does Medicare and Medicaid cover weight loss medications?

No. Weight loss medications are an exclusion for Medicare and by extension Medicaid as weight loss medications were not included in the social security act when they passed it long time ago. At that time, weight loss medications were considered cosmetic and were excluded.

Apart from the weight loss physician visits, does Medicare and Medicaid, also cover obesity counseling?

Yes. Medicare approved Intensive Behavior Therapy for obesity weekly for the first 1 month for 15-30 minutes, and thereafter, biweekly for 15 minutes provided by a qualified health care provider following certain guidelines.

How much weight loss is considered the minimum amount after the first 6 months by Medicare?

Medicare requires a minimum weight loss of about 3 kilograms or 6.6 pounds in the first 6 months for it to continue covering the obesity counseling and treatment.

What percent of the Medicare population are considered overweight or obese?

Over 30% of both men and women in the Medicare population are estimated to be obese.

What are the risks associated with being overweight or obese?

Obesity is directly or indirectly associated with many chronic diseases, including those that disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minorities such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Medicare realizes that addressing the prevention of obesity related disparities has the potential to reduce obesity prevalence while also closing the gap on health disparities among Medicare beneficiaries.

Who can screen and treat obesity for Medicare and Medicaid?

Although screening for obesity and counseling for eligible beneficiaries by primary care providers in settings such as physicians’ offices, unfortunately, our primary care physicians are over burdened and under trained in dealing with chronic non-urgent medical problems such as obesity.

Did you know that up to 94% of all health care providers in the US receive little or no education in Nutrition?

Realizing the need to have physicians that are trained, experienced and focused on treating obesity, W8MD’s insurance physician weight loss program is a pioneer in the nation to help Medicare, Medicaid and other private health insurance patients lose weight safely under careful medical supervision using evidence based, clinically proven measures.

What are the BMI requirements for a Medicare or Medicaid patient to get coverage for obesity?

For a beneficiary who screens positive for obesity with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2, the benefit would include one face-to-face counseling visit each week for one month and one face-to-face counseling visit every other week for an additional five months. The beneficiary may receive one face-to-face counseling visit every month for an additional six months (for a total of 12 months of counseling) if he or she has achieved a weight reduction of at least 6.6 pounds (or 3 kilograms) during the first six months of counseling.

My initial consultation here was for sleep apnea. I am also quite overweight but years of failure at the usual methods had me convinced that there was no hope on that issue. After dealing with the Apnea, Dr. Tumapti diplomatically asked if I was interested in dealing with the issue of my weight. I explained my many failures in this regard and he informed me “It is not your fault”.

He is the first person EVER to say such a thing to me. Even those who did not directly say it was my fault implied it, or I felt as if they did. Dr. Tumpati proceeded to educate me about obesity and why it happens. He is knowledgeable , non judgmental and skilled in helping patients design the program that works. So, for the first time in twenty years I am actually losing weight.

I have lost about 60 pounds since June; from a size 22 to a loose 16. I can bend over and tie my shoes, my knees work without complaining and I no longer need blood pressure medication.

The staff is helpful and efficient, the program works and I recommend this doctor without reservation to anyone who may be struggling with a weight problem.5.0 star rating 5/25/2013

very knowledgeable doctor on the topic of obesity.

I have lost 29 lbs in only 1 month and half. The center offers a very rounded approach to weight loss. I received Counseling, diet, exercise, weight loss medications suggestions. I have been pleased with my weight loss progress. Doctor put me on a diet and Belvig (Anti-obesity pill) and I am only eating about 1200-1500 calories per day.

Very easy to make an appointment.

My weight has been up and down most of my life….mostly up. Over the summer I tried to become more active by running but I did not alter my eating habits. I lost a little weight but the pounds were much harder to drop than they were in my younger. After seeing Dr.Tumpati’s ad in a magazine ,I decided to see Dr.Tumpati.

Dr. Tumpati and the staff have been excellent. Basically, I made an appointment where I was weighed and had my measurements taken. The waiting time is not more than 15 minutes and the staff is very friendly which is a plus point.I then spoke with the Dr. about my goals. He then put me on the VLCD diet which consists of shakes and bars and one regular meal. During this time I also began running regularly.

I saw results right from the beginning. This diet also made me realize that I was able to get through the day without eating as much as I was. Once the weight started coming off my energy levels rose dramatically.

I am currently down 22 lbs in about 2 months or so and I feel amazing.I highly recommend Dr. Tumpati and Sleep Medical Associates, Sleep and W8MD Weight Loss Center for Weight Management.

I slowly started gaining weight for years. I would gain and then lose only about 5 pounds and then gain it back plus 5. I tried every diet, exercise regimen, detoxes, you name it I have probably tried it. All with no luck of losing weight. I had no energy, I have scoliosis in my back so I couldn’t stand for too long without it hurting, I tore a meniscus in my knee because of my weight and my knees swelled off on for a while.

One day I looked in the mirror and truly did not like the way I looked and I started to feel depressed. I then went to the internet and did a search for weight loss alternatives to bariatric surgery. I came across Dr. Prab and went to my first visit and started the weight loss program. Because I work midnights my sleep schedule is all off. I had a sleep study done and it was determined I do not have sleep apnea; however, the lack of proper sleep and insulin resistance is the cause of the weight gain.

I am currently on a very low calorie diet (VLCD). I drink four 100-calorie shakes a day, protein bars with a salad, lean meats, lots of veggies, prescription appetite suppressants, and many bottles of water. I try to stay away from fast food, sodium, sweets, and sodas. In the first week of this program I lost 5 1/2 and subsequently 3 pounds each week there after. I have only been on this program for a month and have lost 12 pounds!!

It is definitely a life changing experience. It feels good to have people notice you are losing weight rather than gaining. My clothes are starting to fit loser and I am excited to get to my goal weight.

I see the doctor every two weeks for a follow up and weight myself at home once a week. I still have 84 more pounds to lose, but at this rate it is definitely possible.

After several years of putting on weight due to stress, and some failures with other approaches by myself, I had finally decided to seek support in my weight loss goals.I was looking for a program that was medically supervised, could provide support, made the decisions simple to comply with given my busy schedule, had and solid scientific and behavioral component and could provide medical support to assist with compliance with the program. It’s been a great match.

The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the Doctor is warm and kind and spends a long time with you during his appointments reviewing the medical basis of the program and your needs and any other health concerns you may have, the food selection is convenient for my work life, and the medication really does help you stay on the program. It’s definitely easier to follow the 1,000 calorie diet with the medications help.

I’ve been steadily losing roughly 2-3 pounds a week since the end of July – right in the safe zone. About 50lbs so far. And I’m right on target to make my goal weight at perhaps the end of January – mid February. Which is ambitious – back where I was in my 20’s and right where the BMI Chart says I should be.

  • I feel better. I sleep better. I can do more than I could. My blood pressure medication has been reduced & will likely be completely eliminated. And I like fitting into clothes that I couldn’t consider just a few months ago. I’m looking forward to the warmer weather again for the first time in ages!

    Highly recommended!

My primary doctor referred me to Dr. Tumpati (Philadelphia) for an updated sleep study for my sleep apnea. While being treated for sleep apnea Dr. Tumpati explained the weight loss program and metabolic syndrome in which he treats. It took several visits and coaching from Dr. Tumpati to convince me that W8MD will be a fit for me.

After a routine visit, I took the first step and made an appointment to see him for weight loss. My start weight was 218 lbs. and was placed on 1200-calorie partial meal replacement program. Between the W8MD program (once a week check-ins with Laura) and 30 mins. Of exercise three times a week, I lost 42 lbs. over a 7-month period.

The change in my life is astounding: Before I could not bend over with cutting off air circulation, my sleep apnea was getting worse, I was a size 38, and a flight of steps was a challenge. Today: I have no problem bending over, sleep apnea is gone and I am off CPAC, I am size 33/34, and steps are no problem up to 20 stories! I owe a great deal of thanks to the W8MD clinic (Dr. Tumpati & Laura) for their knowledge, compassion, and enthusiasm.

I have been very pleased with my weight loss results.i lost 40 lbs. Dr. Tumpati is respectful and monitors my labs and blood pressure weekly. I go off and on the program because of my professional career but I am still able to maintain a healthy weight and I am always welcomed back. Laura his administrative assistant is fabulous and always encouraging regardless if you have a bad weigh-in. There is no judgement here. It’s really the only program that can honestly say works for me:) its easy to follow, no calorie counting.  If you have plateaued on other diets you will see results with this one:) Michelle M.

Lost about 100 lbs and maintaining

FANTASTIC program! Truly a life changer! The first several months I lost on average 3 pounds a week. I have now lost 87 pounds in 10 months and I’m still losing! I can say it feels almost effortless, for with the elimination of most carbs plus the medication I have ZERO cravings and minimal hunger.

My cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar have all returned to normal having previously been considerably elevated. I look and feel twenty years younger (I am 57.) Staff is friendly and supportive, and the science works.

I did not think that I would be able to achieve such results, and certainly not in less than a year. I am amazed at my success, and I could not have done it without Dr. Tumpati and W8MD. D. M. *

Update: UPDATE: It is now a year and a half since I began this journey. I have lost 103 pounds, reaching and actually surpassing by a couple of pounds my weight loss goal, and am maintaining. My monthly visits with Dr. Tumpati, as well as the positive reinforcement of his staff, really help to keep me on track. My new eating habits have become my new normal, and I accept that adhering to these guidelines regarding my food needs to be a permanent part of my health routine, just like brushing my teeth.

Living healthy and feeling good about the way I look are such great ways to start and go through my day that I can’t think of anything better. All my positives are enhanced and any negatives don’t seem as bad because at my center I am healthy, vibrant, energetic, and able to attract goodness. Every day is filled with gratitude that I have emerged from this process – dare I say it? Victorious! – D.M.

Biggest loser lost over 150 lbs

I’ve been going to Dr. Tumpati at the King of Prussia location for about 9 months and have lost 150 pounds*.  I was at a point where my weight was affecting my life and health, ignoring it was no longer an option.  I wanted to lose weight safely, but effectively, yet most people said it was impossible.  It was time to hire a professional. Dawn.

Dr. Tumpati and staff have been great explaining every step of the process and making sure I stay on track.  The accountability and constant encouragement have been key parts of my success, as well as the knowledge that I was following a plan that would work and had actual medical science to back it. I am not finished losing yet, but as compared to 9 months ago, I know I’m already healthier, now’s its just finishing the journey.  This path isn’t easy but if you’ve had enough of your weight being an impact on your health and life, considering getting help like Dr. Tumpati and his staff. It will make it easier.
