Metabolic health risk assessment — W8MD medical team and health resource

A screening framework—not a diagnosis

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of abdominal obesity, elevated blood pressure, abnormal triglycerides and HDL cholesterol, and elevated glucose. Having multiple components raises the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. An online checklist can identify questions to discuss, but laboratory values and blood pressure must be measured accurately by a clinician.

Five commonly assessed components

Component Common clinical threshold concept What to do
Waist circumference Population- and sex-specific central-adiposity cut points Measure at a standardized anatomical location
Triglycerides Elevated fasting triglycerides or treatment for them Review a current lipid panel
HDL cholesterol Low HDL or treatment for low HDL Interpret with the full cardiovascular profile
Blood pressure Elevated pressure or antihypertensive treatment Confirm with repeated, properly taken readings
Fasting glucose Elevated glucose or treatment for hyperglycemia Review fasting glucose and/or A1c as appropriate

What the result should change

Nutrition

Reduce excess energy, refined carbohydrates and saturated fat while increasing fiber and minimally processed foods.

Activity

Combine aerobic activity with resistance training and reduce prolonged sitting.

Sleep

Screen for obstructive sleep apnea, especially with snoring, sleepiness or resistant hypertension.

Medical treatment

Treat blood pressure, glucose and lipids and consider anti-obesity medication when eligible.

Modern weight-treatment options

Wegovy injection/tablets, Wegovy HD, Zepbound and Foundayo are among current FDA-approved incretin-based obesity options, alongside Saxenda and established oral medicines. A medication is selected based on the approved indication, medical history and access—not solely because a checklist score is high.

How W8MD can help

W8MD Weight Loss, Sleep & MedSpa provides physician-supervised care from active offices in Brooklyn, New York and Northeast Philadelphia, serving patients from greater New York City, New Jersey and the greater Philadelphia region. Telehealth may be available when clinically and legally appropriate.

W8MD accepts many insurance plans for visits. When a plan covers an FDA-approved medication and the patient meets its criteria, W8MD can submit prior-authorization documentation. The insurer determines coverage and approval.

W8MD can measure waist and blood pressure, review glucose and lipid testing, diagnose obesity-related risk and create a treatment plan. This page does not replace laboratory testing or diagnose insulin resistance.

Frequently asked questions

Is metabolic syndrome the same as diabetes?

No. It increases risk, but diabetes has separate diagnostic criteria.

Can I have it at a normal BMI?

Yes. Central adiposity and metabolic abnormalities can occur across BMI categories.

Can weight loss reverse it?

Improvement in weight, waist, activity and treatment of each component can substantially reduce risk.
