Successful weight loss

Questions to Consider Before You Choose A Weight Loss Program

Understand where you are and the factors that my be contributing to your weight gain.

  • Start with a BMI calculator to see where you start. BMI is an indicator of body fat – and see where it fits within the BMI categories.
  • Understand that BMI alone is not a great indicator of your metabolic risk as the distribution of the weight is more important than the weight alone.

W8MD Medical Weight Loss Centers of America’s 8 measurements to know your metabolic risk for weight loss!

Do you know your metabolic risk? Do you have extra weight in your belly or upper part of the body? Use these simple steps to know your metabolic risk so you can do something about it!

1. What is your body mass index. You can use a BMI calculator on or any other website to know this as long as you know your correct height and weight. If your BMI is over 25, you should be concerned.

2. Get a tape and measure your waist circumference in the mid section. For men, it should be 40 or lower and for women, it should be 35 or lower in inches. (For Asians, it is 36 and 33 inches for men and women respectively)

3. Know your medical history – do you have a history of high blood pressure?

4. Do you have prediabetes or diabetes? Is you fasting blood sugar above 100 or you take medication for diabetes?

5. Get a copy of your most recent blood work and see if your triglycerides are above 150 or you take a medication for cholesterol.

6. See if your good cholesterol is below 40 for men or below 50 for women or you take a cholesterol medication.

7. Do you have a family history of diabetes?

Set Realistic Goals For Weight Loss

  • If you have a lot of weight to lose, set a realistic intermediate goal, maybe to lose 10 pounds. Remember that even a small amount of weight loss can lead to big health benefits.

Once you understand your weight, your medical history, your metabolic syndrome risk, your waist and hip circumference, you may want to ask yourself these questions.

  • „„What is a healthy weight for me?
  • Do I need to lose weight?
  • „„How much weight should I lose?
  • Could my extra weight be caused by a health problem or by a medicine I am taking?

What are the options to lose weight?

Successful, long-term weight control must focus on your overall health, not just on what you eat. Changing your lifestyle is not easy, but adopting healthy habits may help you manage your weight in the long run.

Effective weight-loss programs include ways to keep the weight off for good. These programs promote healthy behaviors that help you lose weight and that you can stick with every day.

Safe and effective weight-loss programs should include

  • a plan to keep the weight off over the long run guidance on how to develop healthier eating and physical activity habits
  • guidance on how to develop healthier eating and physical activity habits
  • ongoing feedback, monitoring, and support
  • slow and steady weight-loss goals—usually 1 to 3 pounds per week (though weight loss may be faster at the start of a program)

Some weight-loss programs may use very low-calorie diets (up to 800 calories per day) to promote rapid weight loss among people who have a lot of excess weight. This type of diet requires close medical supervision through frequent office visits and medical tests.

Obesity Medicine Fellowship Training

Since Obesity is a risk factor for many sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, and sleep apnea in turn can have an effect on Leptins and Ghrelins that control appetite, food intake and weight, there is an inherent association between sleep disorders and weight. Realizing this, Dr. Tumpati joined a fellowship program in the field of Obesity Medicine and has passed a written board examination in Bariatric Medicine/Obesity Medicine.

Having obtained a thorough knowledge and skills in treating patients with obesity and it’s more than 50 associated conditions, Dr. Tumpati successfully integrated Obesity Medicine Services in his practice and started W8MD, along with Dr. Sobo, to help other physicians get started with an affordable Medical Weight Loss Program at their location.

Dr Tumpati currently serves as the Medical Director at Poly-Tech Sleep Services in Northeast Philadelphia and staff physician at the Sleep Wellness Center of Pottstown, PA. Dr. Tumpati obtained his medical degree from Osmania Medical College, India and completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Abington Memorial Hospital. Dr. Tumpati travels extensively, licensed in many states in the US and serves as the medical director of Sleep Medical Associates and W8MD Medical Weight Loss Center in New York City located at 2003, Bath Avenue, Brooklyn, New York.

In addition to Internal Medicine, Dr. Tumpati is also board certified in Sleep Medicine and has passed a written board examination in Obesity Medicine and is in the process of full certification.

Patient Testimonials

We are truly humbled and honored by the 5 star reviews by anonymous patients that used our service on third party websites such as ZocDoc! Our patient’s that followed the instructions and succeeded in reaching their weight loss goals are our true heroes! It is our passion to help patients reach their goals, and it gives us tremendous joy to see many of our patients come off of many chronic life style medications such as blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes medications, get rid of CPAP for sleep apnea after successfully losing weight! Our biggest loser lost 75 pounds, reached their goal weight, and has been able to keep the weight off in the maintenance phase.
“Let Food Be Your Medicine, Medicine Be Your Food” – Hippocrates!

I spotted a pamphlet in a doctor’s waiting room on W8MD. This peeked my interest and I read on. “Are you tired of being overweight?” I was!

As I read further I discovered that not only was this a center for weight loss but also for sleep problems. My husband had told me that I was snooring very loudly at night and that it seemed I stopped breathing at times.

I called and scheduled an appointment with the doctor. Dr. Tumpati was very through in explaining to me the reason for my increased weight was due to insulin resistance. We also scheduled a sleep study and found that I stopped breathing an average of 38 times per hour due to sleep apnea!

I am now using a machine(CPAP) at night to assist with my breathing. I am experiencing more quality sleep and am not tired during the day. Dr. Tumpati explained that improper sleep can also lead to weight gain.

I began a 1000 calorie partial meal replacement program consisting of nutritional supplements as well as one meal daily – 4 oz of lean protien and a green vegetable.

In 12 weeks I have lost 26 pounds and am moving more freely and feeling better every day. I have a way to go but I know what I have to do to continue to successfully loose weight.

Dr. Tumpati is very knowledgeable on weight management and proper nutrition. He is willing to spend time explaining why and how different foods effect our weight gain and loss. I appreciate understanding the effects of what I have been eating and why it is necessary to make changes to improve my health.
