Overview
Central sleep apnea involves repeated pauses in breathing without the respiratory effort seen in obstructive events. Sleep-related hypoventilation means inadequate ventilation with elevated carbon dioxide. Heart failure, opioids, neurologic disease, high altitude and certain ventilatory-control disorders can contribute.
