CPAP troubleshooting and adherence
CPAP troubleshooting and adherence
Practical solutions for mask leaks, dry mouth, congestion, pressure intolerance and difficulty using CPAP.

Overview
PAP works only when it is used consistently. Early problems are common and often correctable through mask refitting, humidification, pressure review, desensitization and treatment of nasal symptoms. Patients should not abandon therapy or change clinical settings without review.
Key points
Mask leak
Refit while lying in the sleeping position; replace worn cushions and avoid overtightening.
Dryness
Review heated humidification, heated tubing, mouth leak and nasal care.
Pressure discomfort
Ramp or expiratory relief may help; persistent difficulty requires data and pressure review.
Claustrophobia
Practice while awake in short sessions and advance gradually.
How W8MD can help

Frequently asked questions
How many hours should CPAP be used?
Use it whenever sleeping, including naps; insurance compliance thresholds are not the same as ideal clinical use.
Why am I still tired?
Residual OSA, insufficient sleep, leak, medication effects or another sleep disorder may contribute.
Can I change the pressure myself?
Clinical settings should be changed by the treating team after review.
