Sleep apnea treatment options
Sleep apnea treatment options
Compare PAP therapy, oral appliances, weight management, positional therapy and surgical referral for obstructive sleep apnea.

Overview
Obstructive sleep apnea treatment is selected according to severity, symptoms, anatomy, comorbidities, patient preference and sleep-study findings. Positive airway pressure is highly effective, but it is not the only possible component of care. Weight loss can reduce severity in people with overweight or obesity, yet it does not guarantee resolution and should not replace prescribed PAP without reassessment.
Key points
PAP therapy
CPAP or APAP is commonly first-line; BiPAP is used for selected pressure, ventilation or tolerance needs.
Oral appliance
A custom mandibular advancement device may help selected adults, especially with mild-to-moderate OSA or PAP intolerance.
Weight management
Nutrition, activity, anti-obesity medication or bariatric referral may improve OSA when excess weight contributes.
Procedures
ENT or sleep-surgery evaluation may be appropriate for selected anatomical obstruction or persistent disease.
