Get a tape and measure your waist as the distribution of the weight plays a big role. he Waist-hip ratio or waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is the dimensionless ratio of the circumference of the waist to that of the hips. This is calculated as waist measurement divided by hip measurement (W ÷ H). For example, a person with a 30″ (76 cm) waist and 38″ (97 cm) hips has a waist-hip ratio of about 0.78. The waist to hip ratio or WHR has been used as an indicator or measure of health, and the risk of developing serious health conditions. The WHO states that abdominal obesity is defined as a waisthip ratio above 0.90 for males and above 0.85 for females, or a body mass index (BMI) above 30.0.

  • Brooklyn NY weight loss tip 3

    • Make a goal for your weight loss – say you want to lose 30 lbs, and set a time before which you want to do it, say in the next 6 months.
    • Focus your attention on the positive benefits you will get from losing weight.
    • Make weight control changes a top priority in your life.

Brooklyn NY weight loss tip 4

Lose Weight NYC

Compared to some of the other big cities in the United States, the city of New York might be considered a lean city.  While the statistics might support the idea, the numbers are affected due to the high number of super thin individuals in the borough of Manhattan. If you analyze the data and look at the obesity statistics by each borough in the city of New York, you would realize that some boroughs do worse than others.

What percent of the population of New York City are overweight or obese?

Let us look at the statistics – New York City has it’s share of the overweight or obese.

More than half of adult New Yorkers are overweight (34%) or obese (22%) – combined together, the proportion of the population that is overweight or obese is 56%. It does compare favorably however, when you look at the overall obesity and overweight statistics for the entire US where obesity rates are as high as 39% with overweight at over 30% for a combined 70% for both obesity or overweight.

What are the risks of being overweight or obese in New York City?

People (adults and children) who are overweight are at increased risk for over 50 different medical problems including diabetes heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, arthritis, and cancer.

OK, let us say you are overweight or obese, or just have some stubborn areas of fat while being in the normal weight, where do you find proper help that does not cost you an arm and a leg? With over 20, 000 books written on the topic of diet, it is not only overwhelming but also confusing for the average consumer to understand and focus on what is a proven and reliable diet and what is another fad diet.

How to find the best weight loss program in New York City that actually works?

8 things to do find the best weight loss program in NYC.

Step 1 to losing weight in NYC

Where do you start to understand whether you need to lose weight?

While there are many advanced tests that are available such as body plethysmography, the simpler way to know whether you are overweight or obese is to use the popular BMI (body mass index) scale.

So, you can start with checking your Body Mass Index or BMI available on W8MD.

BMI categories

  • BMI < 18 Underweight
  • BMI > 19 to 24.9 Healthy Weight
  • BMI > 25 to 29.9 Overweight
  • BMI > 30 to 34.9 Mildly Obese
  • BMI > 35 to 39.9 Moderately Obese
  • BMI > 40 is Morbidly Obese

Step 2 to lose weight in NYC

Understand your distribution of the weight plays a major role in determining your health risks associated with being overweight or obese. Also note that you could be normal weight but be metabolically obese with central or abdominal distribution of weight which increases your health risks. The opposite is also true where you can be overweight or obese but be metabolically normal.  A simple and practical way to measure your health risks associated with being overweight or obese is to measure your waist circumference.

W8MD's insurance weight loss

W8MD’s insurance weight loss

Excessive abdominal fat may be serious because it places you at greater risk for developing obesity-related conditions, such as Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, and coronary artery disease. Your waistline may be telling you that you have a higher risk of developing obesity-related conditions if you are:

  • A man whose waist circumference is more than 40 inches
  • A non-pregnant woman whose waist circumference is more than 35 inches

For Asians, correct it down by 5 inches both for men and women.

How to correctly measure waist circumference?

To correctly measure waist circumference:

  • Stand and place a tape measure around your middle, just above your hipbones
  • Make sure tape is horizontal around the waist
  • Keep the tape snug around the waist, but not compressing the skin
  • Measure your waist just after you breathe out

Step 3 to lose weight in NYC

Use a free online tool called insulin resistance calculator to find out if you might have underlying reasons such as insulin resistance that makes you gain weight.

What is insulin?

Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that helps glucose in your blood enter cells in your muscle, fat, and liver, where it’s used for energy. Glucose comes from the food you eat. The liver also makes glucose in times of need, such as when you’re fasting. When blood glucose, also called blood sugar, levels rise after you eat, your pancreas releases insulin into the blood. Insulin then lowers blood glucose to keep it in the normal range.

W8MD weight loss team

What is insulin resistance?

Insulin resistance is when cells in your muscles, fat, and liver don’t respond well to insulin and can’t easily take up glucose from your blood. As a result, your pancreas makes more insulin to help glucose enter your cells. As long as your pancreas can make enough insulin to overcome your cells’ weak response to insulin, your blood glucose levels will stay in the healthy range. More than 84 million people ages 18 and older have prediabetes in the United States which is about 1 out of every 3 adults.

Step 4 to lose weight in NYC

Find a weight loss program that has staff and physicians that have specialized training in the field of obesity medicine.

An average physician gets so little nutrition education that one study found 94% of all physicians in the US got little or no nutrition education at all! Most physicians not only  have nothing to offer to their overweight or obese patients, but they start blaming their patients for weight gain as if these patients have been on a mission to gain weight. Nutrition and weight gain are complex topics that need specialized education and experience to deal with these issues.

What makes W8MD weight loss physicians different?

Dr Prab R. Tumpati, founder and medical director of W8MD is a board certified physician with significant practice experience in managing sleep disorders, and obesity. As one of the few physicians that have the privilege of a fellowship training in Obesity Medicine, Dr Tumpati is very passionate about educating the public and physicians about how some of the nutritional concepts were misunderstood. Step 5 to lose weight in NYC

What insurances W8MD weight loss, sleep and medspa centers accept?

While each W8MD location accepts a different set of insurances based on what is popular in those areas, we can say that W8MD accepts most insurances. Some of the insurances we accept include, but not limited to the following:

As one of the very few medical weight loss programs to work with most insurances, W8MD weight loss program is the most affordable weight loss program cheaper than even non-physician supervised weight loss programs such as Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers that add up more than the cost of W8MD. With just $50.00 additional cost on top of insurance that includes up to 2 diet medications, W8MD simply is the most affordable, most effective and most sought after treatment for losing weight under the careful supervision of trained weight loss physicians.

Step 6 to lose weight in NYC

Understand the 5 clinically proven measures to lose weight and consult with an obesity medicine physician to find out which plan is right for you to lose weight.

Obesity is treated with 5 clinically proven measures – despite many fad diets, these 5 are the only proven measures that can help you to lose weight.

Obesity is treated using one or more of these strategies: „

  1. a diet low in calories „
  2. increased physical activity „
  3. behavior therapy „
  4. prescription medications „
  5. weight-loss surgery
Delicious meal replacements

Step 7 to lose weight in NYC

Follow up regularly and see it is a long term problem.

Did you that obesity is a chronic medical problem that needs long term plan? The traditional approach of treating obesity as a short term problem is flawed and does not work. Obesity is a long term medical problem that needs a long term approach. It is important to follow up on a regular basis not only reach your weight loss goals but also to maintain it.

Step 8 to lose weight in NYC
Understand that losing weight in NYC is not about a diet but a lifestyle change – you need to keep at it to keep from regaining the weight.

Although the long-term results of losing weight irrespective of the weight loss measure chosen vary widely, weight regain is common. To prevent weight regain, any weight loss plan should always be combined with other ways to lose weight and with an active follow-up program. For most people who have obesity, the condition is long term and requires a lifetime of attention even after formal methods to treat the obesity end. You may need to commit to permanent changes of healthier eating, regular physical activity, and an improved outlook about food.

At W8MD, we offer a maintenance plan once you reached your weight loss goal so that you can keep the weight off and if start gaining the weight, you can start early.

How can W8MD help me lose weight in NYC?

About 2-3 pounds of week is appropriate for most although even slower weight loss is acceptable. Even a small amount of weight loss of about 5 pounds can have profound impact on reducing overall health.

Some other related questions related to women and pregnancy

  • How does being underweight affect my chances of getting pregnant?

Being overweight or obese can reduce your chances of pregnancy partly due to the underlying aspects that cause the weight gain such as insulin resistance also cause a common problem in women called Polycystic Ovaries or PCOS, which can reduce fertility.

Some weight loss tips you can start

  • Pick a good time to change. Some times in life are more stressful than others. If you have a big change coming up, such as moving, getting married or divorced, graduating, or taking a new job, it may not be a good time to begin losing weight.
  • Set realistic goals that can be measured. Do not expect to lose 30 pounds in the first month. Set a goal of 1 pound a week and track your progress.
  • Reward yourself with a fun activity (but not an unhealthy treat) when you meet each goal!
  • Work on other health problems first. For example, doctors recommend that if you are severely depressed, you should get treatment for depression before you try to lose weight.
  • Check if you have sleep apnea. If you have sleep apnea, talk to a doctor or nurse about losing weight to help treat sleep apnea or about treating the sleep apnea first.
  • Sleep properly and get at least 7 hours of sleep. Not sleeping enough, or having bad sleep quality, can contribute to weight gain. Talk to your doctor or nurse about the best time to work on weight loss, taking into consideration any other health problems you might have.
  • Plan your meals ahead of time. Most people who eat healthy plan most of their meals ahead of time so that they don’t binge as much on unhealthy food. Figure out which meals you’ll be eating at home for the week ahead. Make a grocery store list for those meals and snacks. Stick to your list when you go shopping.

What is the best way for me to lose weight?

Is Saxenda the weight loss drug we have been waiting for?

The latest weight loss drug approved by the U.S. FDA, Saxenda for weight loss, is generating a lot of interest among patients, doctors, and even among the investors – is this the game changer drug for weight loss?

On December 23rd, 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Saxenda (liraglutide [rDNA origin] injection) for weight loss – the 2nd drug to be approved this year after Orexigen’s Contrave (Bupropion and Naltrexone) was approved just a few months ago.

FDA finally waking up to the epidemic of obesity!

Insurance covered medical weight loss NYC Philadelphia Insurance covered medical weight loss NYC Philadelphia

After a long gap of 13 years, FDA started approving new weight loss drugs since mid 2012 when it approved Qsymia and Belviq! And since then, approved 2 more drugs in 2014 – Contrave and Saxenda for help lose weight.

Approved for use in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater (obesity) or adults with a BMI of 27 or greater (overweight) who have at least one weight-related condition such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol, Saxenda has the same active ingredient liraglutide as the popular diabetes drug Victoza.

Liraglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that works more on the real issue that causes weight gain, unlike the traditional stimulant based weight loss medications!

In a study with 4,800 obese and overweight patients with and without significant weight-related conditions that received Saxenda with counseling regarding diet showed that patients had an average weight loss of 4.5 percent from baseline compared to treatment with a placebo (inactive pill) at one year. In this trial, 62 percent of patients treated with Saxenda lost at least 5 percent of their body weight compared with 34 percent of patients treated with placebo.

Results from another study in patients with type 2 diabetes showed that patients had an average weight loss of 3.7 percent from baseline compared to treatment with placebo at one year. In this trial, 49 percent of patients treated with Saxenda lost at least 5 percent of their body weight compared with 16 percent of patients treated with placebo.

Patients using Saxenda should be evaluated after 16 weeks to determine if the treatment is working. If a patient has not lost at least 4 percent of baseline body weight, Saxenda should be discontinued, as it is unlikely that the patient will achieve and sustain clinically meaningful weight loss with continued treatment.

Saxenda is manufactured by Novo Nordisk A/S, Bagsvaerd, Denmark and is distributed by Novo Nordisk, Inc. Plainsboro, New Jersey.

While concerns remain about potential side effects including rare thyroid rumors, pancreatitis etc, the lower strength of the same drug has been very popular as Victoza for patients with diabetes and long been used by physicians off label for weight loss!

W8MD Medical Weight Loss Centers offers Saxenda for weight loss for eligible patients!

New York City’s Best Weight Loss Program

What is the best medical weight loss program in New York City?

While the answer depends on what you are looking for, here are some of the features of the best weigth loss program

Successful, long-term weight control must focus on your overall health, not just on what you eat. Changing your lifestyle is not easy, but adopting healthy habits may help you manage your weight in the long run.

Effective weight-loss programs include ways to keep the weight off for good. These programs promote healthy behaviors that help you lose weight and that you can stick with every day.

Most weight-loss programs may use very low-calorie diets (up to 800 calories per day) to promote rapid weight loss among people who have a lot of excess weight.

And the program should be affordable and ideally accept health insurances so your insurance,  not you pay for the visits.

The physician should be well trained and has passed a board examination in the field of obesity medicine.

We are happy to say we meet and exceed the above requirements, accept health insurance, have a physician who is fellowship trained in Obesity medicine and also able to address comorbid sleep problems.

Very Low Calorie Diets For Weight Loss

What is a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) Diet?

A VLCD is a special diet that provides up to 800 calories per day. VLCDs use commercial formulas, usually liquid shakes, soups, or bars, which replace all your regular meals. These formulas are not the same as the meal replacements you can find at grocery stores or pharmacies, which are meant to replace one or two meals a day.

w8md-weight-loss-supplementsQuick Weight Loss Almost As Fast As Post Bariatric Surgery With VLCD Diets

This type of diet is used to promote quick weight loss, often as a way to jump-start an obesity treatment program. VLCD formulas are designed to provide all of the nutrients you need while helping you lose weight quickly. In fact, what gastric bypass does is similar to VLCD in the fact that, post bariatric surgery, you will be forced to limit yourself small quantities of food similar to that of the VLCD. Most people would choose a natural, non-surgical method such as the VLCD, to restrict their calories, given a choice of surgery versus the natural VLCD Diets under careful medical supervision.

Medical Nutrition Therapy For Fast Weight Loss

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) programs include using specialized meal replacements and very low calorie diets (VLCD,) also called protein sparing modified fasts (PSMF). These plans reduce calories using meal replacements and simple meals for as long as several months to reduce weight rapidly. We offer a variety of plans to suit your particular tastes and medical nutrition needs.

VLCD and LCD Low Calorie, Low Carbohydrate Balanced and Affordable Meal Replacements

We offer 800 calorie very low calorie diets with or without meal replacement. We also offer 1000-1500 calorie Low Calorie Diets with or without meal replacements along with appropriate medications for fast and safe weight loss under careful medical supervision and your insurance might cover the cost of the visits.

A very low-calorie diet (VLCD) is not just any diet that is low in calories. It is a special type of diet that replaces all of your meals with prepared formulas, often in the form of liquid shakes.  A VLCD may be used for a short time to promote quick weight loss among some people who are considered to be obese. The diet requires close care from your doctor and is usually combined with other ways to lose weight such as weight loss medications or “diet pills” to suppress the appetite, and food cravings. prab-r-tumpati-3

What are the health benefits of a VLCD?
A VLCD may allow you to lose about 3 to 5 pounds per week. This may lead to an average total weight loss of 44 pounds over 12 weeks.
Such a weight loss can rapidly improve medical conditions linked to obesity, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

Rapid Weight Loss With 800 calorie VLCD Diet
The rapid weight loss experienced by most people on a VLCD can be very motivating. Patients who participate in a VLCD program that also includes lifestyle changes may lose about 15 to 25 percent of their initial weight during the first 3 to 6 months. They may maintain a 5 percent weight loss after 4 years if they adopt a healthy eating plan and physical activity habits.

What is body mass index?

What is BMI or Body Mass Index?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person’s weight and height. BMI provides a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.

Does BMI measure body fat?

BMI does not measure body fat directly, but research has shown that BMI correlates to direct measures of body fat, such as underwater weighing and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA).1, 2 BMI can be considered an alternative for direct measures of body fat. Additionally, BMI is an inexpensive and easy-to-perform method of screening for weight categories that may lead to health problems.

How is BMI used?
BMI is used as a screening tool to identify possible weight problems for adults. However, BMI is not a diagnostic tool. For example, a person may have a high BMI. However, to determine if excess weight is a health risk, a healthcare provider would need to perform further assessments. These assessments might include skinfold thickness measurements, evaluations of diet, physical activity, family history, and other appropriate health screenings

What should be my ideal BMI?

  • Underweight = BMI less than 18.5
  • Normal weight = BMI of 18.5 – 24.9
  • Overweight = BMI of 25 – 29.9
  • Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

How about body composition analysis?

Other methods to measure body fatness include skinfold thickness measurements (with calipers), underwater weighing, bioelectrical impedance(body composition analysers), dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and isotope dilution. However, these methods are not always readily available, and they are either expensive or need highly trained personnel. Furthermore, many of these methods can be difficult to standardize across observers or machines, complicating comparisons across studies and time periods.

Limited Acceptance
Due to popular demand for the insurance weight loss program, we can only accept about 10 new patients per week at this time in our New York City or Greater Philadelphia medical weight loss offices.

W8MD has helped patients achieve their goals by using a proven four-step method for safe weight loss:

•a physician-supervised diet and weight loss medication,
•a personally structured and administered exercise program,
•comprehensive behavior therapy, and
•ongoing weight maintenance support.

We can help you achieve long-lasting weight loss without feeling constantly hungry and deprived. When you resent your weight loss plan because you feel constantly hungry, it is much more difficult to maintain any significant lifelong changes. When you feel hungry, you are biologically driven to eat, and diet plans that force you to fight that biological impulse can be difficult to maintain. At W8MD Medical Weight Loss Program, we want to help you achieve lasting weight loss results and make changes that will keep you healthy for a lifetime.

W8MD Medical Weight Loss Program is dedicated to individualized, affordable treatment and as one of the very physician supervised medical weight loss programs to accept most health insurances for the weight loss physician visits.  Our non-surgical medical weight loss program is based on the latest medical research and utilizes proven methods to lose weight rapidly and keep it off for a lifetime.

3 things to do to lose weight in NYC

1. NYC weight loss step 1.

Understand your height to weight ratio or body mass index before losing weight in NYC.

Body mass index determines where you stand in terms of your health risk related to being overweight or obese in New York City.

Here is a table that determines your BMI and weight status. As can be seen from the table below, you are considered obese or overweight if your BMI in NYC falls in the range of 25 or more.

BMI
Weight Status
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 – 24.9 Normal or Healthy Weight
25.0 – 29.9 Overweight
30.0 and Above Obese

2. NYC weight loss step 2.

Once you know your BMI, you want to also know your weight distribution, or waist to hip ratio as where the excess body fat is carried in the body also plays a significant role in health risk. For example, if your weight is mostly in the tummy or you have excess belly fat, your health risk of being overweight or obese in NYC is higher than otherwise.

W8MD's insurance weight loss

W8MD’s insurance weight loss

Waist-to-Hip Ratio is determined by the simple formula of waist circumference divided by hip circumference.

  • Waist to Hip Ratio bigger than 0.8 means you have an “apple-shaped” body type which means you are at a HIGHER risk for chronic diseases
  • If your waist to hip ratio less than or equal to 0.8 • “pear-shaped” body type • LOWER risk for chronic diseases

3. NYC weight loss step 3.

Once you know the above 2 things, and you know you need to lose weight, then start the research on finding the best weight loss program in NYC for you.

With over 20,000 books written on diet, and weight loss, and so much confusing information, you may want to consult with an experienced weight loss physician before starting weight in New York.
