Cellulose is a carbohydrate, also known as a polysaccharide, that is present in the cell walls of plants. It is the most abundant organic compound in nature and is an essential component of plant-based food sources. Cellulose is not digestible by humans, and it passes through the digestive system relatively intact. However, it serves an important function in the digestive process by adding bulk to stool and promoting regular bowel movements. Cellulose is commonly found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other plant-based foods and is considered an important part of a healthy diet.
