The ankle, or talocrural region, is the joint between the foot and leg. The ankle consists of three joints: the talocrural or ankle joint proper, the subtalar joint, and the inferior tibiofibular joint. This joint is responsible for the dorsiflexion and plantarflexion of the foot. In common usage, the term ankle refers to the ankle region exclusively. In medical terminology, the term "Ankle" can refer to the region as a whole or to the talocrural joint specifically.
