Is a small-diameter blood vessel in the microcirculation that extends from an artery and branches off to reach the capillaries. Arterioles are the primary site of vascular resistance and have muscular walls (typically only one to two layers of smooth muscle). The transition from arterioles to capillaries is characterized by the greatest change in blood pressure and blood flow velocity.
