Is a blood vessel that transports blood from the heart to the rest of the body (tissues, lungs, etc.). The two exceptions are the pulmonary and umbilical arteries, which transport deoxygenated blood to oxygenating organs. This extracellular fluid that fills the arterial system constitutes the effective arterial blood volume.
