The biliary tract (biliary tree or biliary system) refers to the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts, as well as the way in which they produce, store, and secrete bile. Water, electrolytes, bile acids, cholesterol, phospholipids, and conjugated bilirubin make up bile. Some substances are synthesized by hepatocytes (liver cells), while the remainder are extracted from the blood by the liver.
