FODMAP is an acronym that stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols. These are types of carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed by some people, which can lead to digestive discomfort and symptoms such as bloating, gas, and abdominal pain. The low FODMAP diet is an eating plan that restricts high FODMAP foods to help alleviate these symptoms in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other digestive disorders. The diet involves avoiding or limiting foods such as wheat, dairy, onions, garlic, and beans, and instead opting for low FODMAP alternatives like rice, quinoa, lactose-free dairy, and certain fruits and vegetables. While the low FODMAP diet can be effective for managing symptoms in some people, it is important to work with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian to ensure that the diet is nutritionally balanced and sustainable in the long term.
