Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms. Gerd can be caused by a number of factors, including diet, lifestyle, and medical conditions. Obesity is a major risk factor for gerd, as excess body fat can increase pressure on the abdomen and contribute to the reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus.
