A change in the dna that makes up a gene. Mutations can occur when a cell divides and there are errors in the way the dna is copied. Mutations can also be caused by exposure to certain chemicals and radiation, and from infections. Some gene mutations are passed from parents to their children. Others occur during a person’s lifetime.
