Idiopathic hypersomnia

Idiopathic hypersomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and prolonged, uninterrupted nighttime sleep. Unlike narcolepsy, there are no sudden and involuntary lapses into sleep during the day. The cause of idiopathic hypersomnia is not well understood, and it is thought to be related to a malfunction in the central nervous system that regulates sleep and wakefulness. Idiopathic hypersomnia is often treated with medications that promote wakefulness, such as stimulants, and with lifestyle changes that promote good sleep hygiene.
