The induction phase is the first phase of the Atkins diet, a low-carbohydrate diet that is designed to promote weight loss. During the induction phase, carbohydrate intake is restricted to 20 grams per day, and dieters focus on consuming high-protein, high-fat foods. The goal of the induction phase is to transition the body into a state of ketosis, in which the body burns fat for energy instead of carbohydrates.
