A general term for the many substances that are naturally produced by plants (“phyto” means plant). Colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, herbs, nuts, and seeds are rich in phytochemicals. Types of phytochemicals include anthocyanins, carotenoids, flavonoids, isoflavones, and polyphenols. Also called phytonutrients.
