Gluten, a protein present in wheat, barley, and rye, is not present in gluten-free diets or food items. Those with celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, or wheat allergies must follow gluten-free diets since gluten can have harmful consequences on their health.

Chronic celiac disease

In people with celiac disease, eating gluten causes an immunological reaction that destroys the lining of the small intestine, impairing absorption of nutrients and causing a variety of symptoms. Diarrhea, bloating, stomach pain, exhaustion, and weight loss are some of the signs of celiac disease. Celiac disease can only be managed with a lifelong gluten-free diet.

Gluten intolerance

In people with gluten sensitivity, eating gluten can result in a variety of symptoms including headaches, bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Contrary to celiac disease, gluten sensitivity does not result in an immunological reaction or small intestinal damage. Although the precise etiology of gluten sensitivity is unknown, symptoms are frequently improved by following a gluten-free diet.

Wheat allergy

When the immune system overreacts to wheat proteins, it can cause a variety of symptoms, including hives, swelling, itching, difficulty breathing, and anaphylaxis. People with a wheat allergy frequently decide to follow a gluten-free diet as a precaution, even though a wheat allergy is not the same as a gluten sensitivity.

Gluten-free diet

Eliminating all foods and items that contain gluten, such as wheat, barley, and rye, is the goal of a gluten-free diet. Several packaged and processed foods, including baked products, cereal, pasta, and bread, contain gluten and should be avoided. But, there are gluten-free options available, such as bread, pasta, and baked goods produced without gluten and flours made from rice, maize, potato, and other grains.

Those who adopt a gluten-free diet should carefully check food labels and steer clear of cross-contamination with gluten-containing items while prepping and cooking. To make sure they are getting all the necessary nutrients in their diet, some people might also need to take supplements or consult with a dietician.
