How obesity and cancer are connected
Higher amounts of body fat are associated with increased risk of multiple cancers. The National Cancer Institute identifies consistent evidence for at least 13 cancer types, including postmenopausal breast, colorectal, endometrial, esophageal adenocarcinoma, gallbladder, kidney, liver, meningioma, multiple myeloma, ovarian, pancreatic, stomach cardia and thyroid cancers.
An association does not mean every person with obesity will develop cancer or that weight is the only cause. Age, tobacco, alcohol, infections, inherited risk, environmental exposures and access to screening also matter.

Adipose tissue can alter estrogen and other hormonal signals that influence selected tumors.
Insulin signaling
Insulin resistance and higher insulin-related growth signals may support abnormal cell growth.

Weight management during or after cancer treatment
Patients with active cancer should coordinate weight change with oncology. Unplanned loss can indicate disease or treatment toxicity, and intentional restriction may be unsafe during periods of poor intake. Survivorship plans should protect muscle, bone health and nutritional status. Evidence on whether intentional loss prevents recurrence varies by cancer and remains under study.
