Physical activity is any movement of the body that requires energy expenditure. It includes any form of exercise, sports, and physical work or household tasks that get your heart rate up and cause you to breathe harder. Physical activity is important for maintaining good health and can help prevent chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

Benefits

The benefits of physical activity include improving heart health, reducing the risk of chronic disease, improving mood and mental health, and promoting better sleep. It can also help with weight management by burning calories and increasing metabolism. Regular physical activity can also improve bone density and muscle strength, which can help prevent falls and injuries.

AHA recommendations

The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity per week, or a combination of both, for overall cardiovascular health. It is also recommended to do muscle-strengthening activities at least two days a week.

Examples

Some examples of moderate-intensity activities include brisk walking, gardening, dancing, and bicycling at a casual pace. Vigorous-intensity activities include running, swimming laps, and playing singles tennis. Muscle-strengthening activities include weightlifting, using resistance bands, and bodyweight exercises such as push-ups and squats.

Change daily routine

In addition to structured exercise, it is important to incorporate physical activity into daily routines, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking or biking to work, or going for a walk during lunch breaks. Sedentary behavior, such as sitting for long periods of time, can counteract the benefits of physical activity, so it is important to incorporate movement throughout the day.
