Hypnic jerks are involuntary muscle twitches or spasms that occur when falling asleep. They are a common and benign occurrence and are thought to be caused by a sudden muscle contraction in response to a feeling of falling. Hypnic jerks can be reduced by practicing good sleep hygiene and reducing caffeine intake.
