Cataplexy is a sudden and brief loss of muscle control, typically triggered by strong emotions such as laughter, anger, or surprise. This sudden loss of muscle tone can cause a person to collapse, but it does not result in loss of consciousness. Cataplexy is a symptom of narcolepsy, a sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden, uncontrollable sleep attacks. Treatment options may include medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes.
