Medical weight loss options refer to interventions that use medical or surgical methods to promote weight loss. These options are usually recommended for individuals who have a BMI over 30 or who have a BMI over 27 and have weight-related medical problems, such as diabetes or hypertension.
The following are some of the common medical weight loss options:
- Prescription medications: Prescription medications for weight loss are recommended for individuals who have a BMI over 30 or who have a BMI over 27 and have weight-related medical problems. These medications work by reducing appetite or by blocking the absorption of fat. Examples of prescription weight loss medications include Wegovy, Saxenda, Mounjaro, Ozempic, Contrave, Phentermine/topiramate, Phentermine, Diethylpropion, Phendimetrazine, Plenity, and orlistat.
- Meal replacements: Meal replacements are low-calorie shakes or bars that replace one or two meals a day. These meal replacements are designed to provide the necessary nutrients while reducing calorie intake.
- Bariatric surgery: Bariatric surgery is a surgical procedure that involves altering the digestive system to promote weight loss. This surgery is usually recommended for individuals with a BMI over 40 or a BMI over 35 with weight-related medical problems. The two most common types of bariatric surgery are gastric bypass and gastric sleeve.
- Low-calorie diets: Low-calorie diets involve reducing calorie intake to promote weight loss. These diets typically involve consuming 800 to 1500 calories per day and are usually supervised by a healthcare professional.
- Very low-calorie diets: Very low-calorie diets involve consuming less than 800 calories per day. These diets are usually recommended for individuals with a BMI over 30 who have weight-related medical problems. Very low-calorie diets are usually supervised by a healthcare professional.
